Manchu was a major language of Qing government and court culture. Large bodies of administrative, historical, religious, and literary material survive in Manchu. Scholars still learn the language because Manchu records can preserve terminology, institutional detail, and perspectives that are unavailable or differently framed in Chinese-language materials.
